Oxford dictionary

What is it?

Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in neurological traits and functioning present among individuals. Embracing neurodiversity recognises and values the diverse ways in which individuals brains work, acknowledging that differences in cognitive abilities and styles contribute to the richness of human experiences.

Just like planets in a solar system with distinct characteristics, strengths, and influences, neurodivergent individuals bring their own skills, perspectives, and talents to society. Embracing neurodiversity is like appreciating the intricate dance of these planets, understanding that each plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance and diversity of the entire system. Whether dealing with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or other brain types, individuals can overcome hurdles and harness the strengths inherent in diverse brain wiring. This understanding allows people of all brain types, whether neurodiverse or neurotypical, to unlock a broad spectrum of potential across various aspects of life.

‘Neurodiversity is, ultimately, a biological fact of the infinite variety of human neurocognition. Now, the same term ‘neurodiversity’ is also being used to represent a fast-growing sub-category of organisational diversity and inclusion that seeks to embrace and maximise the talents of people who think differently’.
